How to comment and vote[edit]

Any logged-in user is welcome to vote and to comment on the requests below. Votes from unregistered users are not counted, but comments may still be made. If the nomination is successful, a bureaucrat will grant the relevant rights. However, the closing bureaucrat has discretion in judging community consensus, and the decision will not necessarily be based on the raw numbers. Among other things, the closing bureaucrat may take into account the strength of any arguments presented and the experience and knowledge of the commenting users. For example, the comments and votes of users who have zero or few contributions on Commons may at the bureaucrat's discretion be discounted.

It is preferable if you give reasons both for Symbol support vote.svg Support votes or Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose ones as this will help the closing bureaucrat in their decision. Greater weight is given to argument, with supporting evidence if needed, than to a simple vote.

Requests for Oversight rights[edit]

When complete, pages listed here should be archived to Commons:Oversighters/Archive.

  • Please read Commons:Oversighters before voting here. Any logged in user may vote, although those who have few or no previous edits may not be fully counted.

Hello all. Recently, an oversighter was removed for inactivity and now we're down to 3. As the current team is primarily based in Europe and I'm based in Asia, I figured that I might want to hop on to help to cover the remaining silent hours. About me: I've been an admin since Sep 2020 and an active global sysop that actively manages x-wiki abuse. I'm also active on IRC so I will be able to respond to pings (if any). Having this right would allow me to remove derogatory posts/content that aligns with the global policy as quickly as possible. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 12:15, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • I could easily support this request, but it's just too many flags (~50 on all projects, including being sysop at 8 projects). I agree that Commons could have another oversighter. However, this oversighter need to unequivocally commit to stay active here... in this context, I am Symbol neutral vote.svg neutral. Érico (talk) 21:33, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Érico, Indeed, Judging by their contribs elsewhere[1] they're virtually active on every wiki here which sort of raises questions as you cannot be everywhere at once nor should you be expected to be and IMHO there's not really any need to be at so many different wikis, But that being said they make between 1-8k edits here a month[2] so they're certainly active here.
I do question though how can they do an efficient job here if they're say at SK.Wiki or Wikibooks dealing with oversight issues there .... Again you can't be everywhere at once. Certainly raises some questions. –Davey2010Talk 23:51, 18 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Érico and Davey2010: I'd like to address the issues raised. As it's still a COVID-19 pandemic period, I basically have the luxury of working from home and have access to my computer as and when I want to. Furthermore, I'm basically working freelance so this further enables me to react quickly (or relatively quickly). Next, about the rights issues, most of the rights I have are passive and I have no additional editing rights other than being able to edit some protected pages. And similar to this request, sysop rights on some wikis, such as en.wb, wikidata are for me to react quickly to spammers/trollers. Lastly, and this applies on wikis where I have advanced rights, I am certainly willing to request removal of said rights if I don't see myself having the time to serve the local community. Hope this answers the issues raised. Thanks. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 10:43, 19 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hey @Minorax, Many thanks for explaining that, I had wrote a long essay on why I don't agree with having advanced permissions everywhere etc but that's another discussion for another venue. I should also state for the record you're not an oversighter at SK Wiki or Wikibooks not sure why I thought you were so apologies for that, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 23:26, 19 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • A minor concern: I think Minorax is based in China, is that a privacy concern given the Chinese Government's views of Wikipedia? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:19, 20 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose - Ignoring the 165 edits made last year the user has only essentially been here this year, Their talkpage includes a copyvio notice (mistakes happen) and a DR where the user seemingly added an incorrect template which I see as being careless, These 2 red flags are enough for me to oppose unfortunately. –Davey2010Talk 20:20, 23 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Having seen Red-tailed hawk's work on the VRT, I lean to Symbol support vote.svg Support their request but not now - please come back after sometime, in my opinion. Best, ─ The Aafī (talk) 14:21, 25 September 2022 (UTC) Modified, 14:40, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support User certainly knows what they're doing. I disagree with arguments based on time spent (volunteering) on Commons. Knowledge and motivation, which this user has, is enough for me. Bedivere (talk) 14:28, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Bedivere I see it as longer tenure = more knowledge, Given the complexity with some licences/images/FOP I don't believe it's possible to grasp everything here within a year but of course that's just my opinion. Not everyone agrees with my logic and that's fine (would be boring if we were all the same :) ), –Davey2010Talk 20:23, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Of course, Davey, we don't have to agree ;) Although I concur more experience is the better, and we don't really want to have to go and fix whatever error this user or another may do, we are humans, we always commit mistakes. Licensing review is a big deal, but the user may be knowledgeable already in the matter since they are a member of VRT and who knows what is their offline background. I am a law student and regard myself as knowledgeable in copyright issues, but I'm not requesting the right for myself because I am not very active. But then again, it is only my opinion. Kind regards Bedivere (talk) 23:50, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • Symbol support vote.svg Support: Red-tailed hawk is more experienced than initially meets the eye--they have access to the permissions queue in VRT and do good work there. Furthermore, they are a copyright clerk on en.wiki, and I trust their judgement. Sure, it isn't the same as licenses and image policy, but there is overlap between the two; such as a core understanding of compatible licensing and URAA. They've assisted me actually in evaluating URAA, FOP, and images, and even if they don't fully grasp the necessary policy, they are mature and know the limits of their knowledge. I trust them to not review images that they are not confident on their evaluation on. Sennecaster (talk) 01:43, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Requests for permission to run a bot[edit]

Before making a bot request, please read the new version of the Commons:Bots page. Read Commons:Bots#Information on bots and make sure you have added the required details to the bot's page. A good example can be found here.

When complete, pages listed here should be archived to Commons:Bots/Archive.

Any user may comment on the merits of the request to run a bot. Please give reasons, as that makes it easier for the closing bureaucrat. Read Commons:Bots before commenting.

Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought: changing the username for users having renamed their account (probably mostly users from French Wikipedia). I tested the bot yesterday with a first case and it worked well.

Automatic or manually assisted: Supervised (every request is launched manually, and I check a subset of the edits in real-time)

Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): One-time run at each user request

Maximum edit rate (e.g. edits per minute): 6 edits per minute (default for Pywikibot on PAWS), but I can lower it if needed

Bot flag requested: (Y/N): Y

Programming language(s): Python

  • Isn't user renaming is done globally these days? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:46, 20 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@EugeneZelenko: the account is renamed globally but the old account name stays in every wikipage, including file descriptions. kvardek du (la plej bela nombro) 14:43, 20 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It'll be reasonable to have global bot for such purposes, similar to User:CommonsDelinker. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:04, 21 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On long run, your usages replacement feature could be merged with the "global rename [account]" feature.
This exact global usages replacement function already exist for files renaming on Commons which also rename all usages across the various wikis. Since that very "global rename [media]"'s code already exists, it just need to make it available as an option for "global rename [account]". Could be both low cost and cool. Yug (talk) 09:33, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • I think edits like Special:Diff/683299131 are valid when done per user request (and a Commons-only problem that should be resolved here), but I think Special:Diff/683306522 is invalid. --Krd 10:36, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That was also done per user request. Commons:Username policy#Changing your username states that "Signatures on discussion pages will continue to use the old name; while these can be changed manually, it is not recommended unless a contributor wishes to remove as much information as possible about their previous name for privacy reasons". The privacy was the motivation of the change here; using a bot just makes easier to respect that request for privacy from the user.
In the opposite case, it is easy for the bot to only edit file namespace. kvardek du (la plej bela nombro) 15:24, 22 August 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please make better edit summaries. I think will be good idea to mention category and key there. I don't think that words should be merged in key, like in File:Fi-vegaani-ei-syö-ruokaa-jossa-on-eläinperäisiä-lisäaineita.ogg or File:Fi-Minä olen kaksikymmentäviisi vuotta vanha.ogg. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:25, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@User:EugeneZelenko Better edit summaries are possible. Whitespace and greyspace is removed in order to give a more predictable position of files containing commas, brackets, long, superlong and hyperlong dashes etc. Not merging is not really difficult, on the contrary. Taylor 49 (talk) 22:20, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think it's good idea to make keys same as they should appeared in print (== readable). --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:38, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]
